Released by WEA in 1979, Aku Ketawa places Malaysian club band Heavy Machine at the meeting point of disco-era Malay pop and local dance traditions. Its twelve tracks include the title song, “Joget Heavy Machine,” which references the Malay social dance, and the traditional “Tudung Periok.” Arranged by the band and produced by H. Richard, it offers an intriguing route into Southeast Asian disco through a distinctly local repertoire—a record connecting nightclub culture with songs rooted closer to home.
